I've been looking for an alternative. I found Desktop Info to be quite good and will run over the top of a deployed desktop background. The best BgInfo alternative is Rainmeter, which is both free and Open Source. Other great apps like BgInfo are Uwidgets, Conky, Eww and Desktop Info. Desktopinfo is a simple exe with an ini configuration file. It can live happily on a network share with no EULA to accept or any other annoying.
